  • A future iPhone may get a 200MP camera -- eventually

The main reason phone makers are adding 200 MP sensors isn’t to take actual 200 MP photos — it’s mostly for 8K video recording.

To record 8K, you need about 33 to 36 megapixels. But small phone sensors don’t perform well at that resolution, especially in low light. That’s why they use 2x2 pixel binning, which combines four pixels into one to improve image quality. To get a binned image with 36 MP, you need a sensor with 4 times that resolution — around 144 MP.

But there’s another challenge: camera shake. Phones move a lot when you record handheld, and to fix that digitally, the phone needs extra pixels around the edges. This gives the software room to crop and stabilize the video without losing resolution. The smaller the sensor, the worse the shake looks, so you need even more headroom — about another 50 MP or so just for stabilization.

Add that up, and you’re at around 200 MP total. So it’s not really about capturing super high-res photos — it’s about making sure 8K video looks clean, stable, and sharp, even on a tiny smartphone sensor.

  • MacBook Air with M4 & Mac Studio with M4 Max, M3 Ultra have arrived

I ordered it with upgrades. It said it'll deliver on 17th. Then 13th. And now, it said it's delivering today!

  • Mac Studio gets an update to M4 Max or M3 Ultra

The fact that M3 Ultra now support up to 512 GB RAM is pretty amazing. It's great for large scale LLMs. Ultra 2 would only support 192GB at max.

  • Apple Maps still calls it the Gulf of Mexico, and politicians are upset

I find it all very entertaining.
One lot of yanks are currently overloaded with euphoria at the thought of a wrecking ball tearing the establishment down, the other lot are crying in their cups.

and why not call it the Gulf of America? It isn’t as though the left aren’t busy changing place names all the time.
What did Gulf of Mexico do to hurt Americans?

  • Asus ProArt Display 5K review: 27-inch Retina for a bargain

I have the Art Pro and this quote: "One oddity that stood out was the default setting for "Dynamic Dimming" creates an annoying banding effect when moving the mouse around on a dim uniform color, like a wallpaper. Turn this off if you notice the backlight brightness change in bands — you can't miss it."

It was really annoying and I was relieved that turning off the dynamic dimming stopped that odd banding. It should not be set to default. It's hard to describe, it's kinda like "glowing" and "banding" thrown together and becomes apparent if you drag a window around on a solid background color.

    "
The HDR mode is washed out over the USB-C connection, likely because of using an older DisplayPort alt mode spec. The HDMI 2.1 port handles HDR fine, and the colors look great."

I didn't realize that USB-C was the reason for the washed out when HDR is enabled. Unfortunately, I have a second display which only uses HDMI so I cannot use HDMI with my 5K. I am not sure if it's because the USB-C cable that came bundled with the monitor is cheap and doesn't offer full functionality (likely not USB4). I wonder if USB4 to HDMI cable will work.
